Online means when a machine is in running state and is connected with another device.... For example, when any network printer is online, computers that are connected with it also get printed copy with that network. The term online means connection to the Internet. In the same way, devices like, scanners, video Cameras, audio Interfaces and other things can be asked to be online when they are running and connected together with computer system.
But, the term "online" actually means being connected to the Internet. This connection is available on every mode, either it's a phone line, or a dial-up or DSL modem, a cable line or via cable modem, or just a wireless connection.
A computer can be online even if it is connected to a computer network via connection. You should know about your computer that whether it is connected to the network or not. When most of the network are routed, then it is also connected with the internet. When computers or other devices do not have internet connection they are considered as offline.
